Simple and powerful media player

Movist is a simple but powerful player for Mac which distinguishes itself with its high quality capture features.

It supports QuickTime and FFmpeg and also supports subtitles. You can watch videos in full screen mode and it allows you to switch instantly between different aspect ratios from default to widescreen. It seems that Movist has been designed as a replacement for Quicktime although unfortunately, it doesn't support the Apple remote like the former does.

You can configure keyboard shortcuts to fast-forward and rewind Movist videos but it's the encoding features that will appeal to the majority of users. You can switch between Quicktime and FFmpeg on the fly which is something definitely not available with Quicktime with which you need Perian installed to encode into FFmpeg.

Extremely lightweight, great for subtitles and excellent for those that need to encode and decode Quciktime and FFmpeg formats, Movist is generally an excellent all round video player.

Was the best for subs, now it's the worst.. After the last update subtitle settings window became much less handy -preview frame is gone for reasons unknown. Subtitles and OSD are cropped from the bottom. Player became pretty useless for watching movies with subs.

Does not support subtitles. Most people said the subtitles do not work on this one, even on the latest version. it's quite disappointing. Pros: Quick launchSupport many formats Cons: Do not support subtitles

Nice . Since the last update it does support the Apple Remote, but I still can't find a way to take snapshots. (With MPlayerX you just press MAJ+S). Movist is basically equivalent to MPlayerX, a little better looking thanks to the customizable themes but MPlayerX allows you to capture images. Pros: Similar to MPlayerX, Lion ready and supports the Apple Remote now Cons: No Snapshots

Goold looking and versatile player that shows much promise. Love the look of this player )1.0.2 on Mac) and its ability to play many formats and codecs without much problem... The default Crystal Skin is a nice touch and the players support for multi language m4v is there where it is not in QUicktime 10, However despite this I am seriously let down by the player's subtitle handling. I live in a multi lingual household --- The subtitle tracks on the test video are English and Spanish, the player playes english only and there is no way to turn it off or even select the Spanish track; The option is greyed out. However despite this on desiously undesirable flaw it is a very functional and promising piece of eye candy that could well become my no #1 player if the subtitle issues get sorted for the better. For the time being though VLC remains the cream of the Crop. On a scale or QUicktime (1) to VLC (10) I'd give this player about an 8 at best at the time of writing Pros: Slick looks and ability to play multiple formats and codecs without nagging the user for a codec every time. Multiple Audio track support - particularly in m4v format, Cons: Appaling Subtitle support particularly for muxed in multi tracks

Very remarkable player with unique advanced feautures. Movist is not just another Mac player, set of its features seems to be superior to any other player, even on its current raw stage of development. Those are not necessary needed for each and every user(otherwise they would be in QuickTime), but there is a bunch of hard users with higher requirements, most of those users are anime fans, and the other people who watch videos in a second language, with external subtitles, and/or videos with not so popular extensions as .mkv and .ogm. So let's write down in detail all the Pros and Cons. Pros: Ability to load, unload and synchronize external subtitles on the fly (and "on the fly" part is likely unique to any other player in any OS)Ability to switch soundtracksHandy keyboard shortcutsSkinning and modding ability Cons: No .ass subtitles styles support, so positioned and styled subs, or karaoke will appear as dull colored .srt
